MONROE, CT —The Monroe community is rallying around a 5-year-old girl who is recovering from brain cancer surgery.
Chloe Capra had complained of having headaches on and off for a few months, before the child’s preschool teacher at Children’s Adventure Center brought the condition to the attention of the girl’s mother, Jessica.
Thinking Chloe might need glasses, Jessica took her to an eye doctor on June 17, according to Cara McDermott, Jessica’s sister. After getting a second opinion, the doctor had her scheduled for an MRI that same day.

The scan revealed a large mass on the right side of Chloe’s brain and led to an immediate admittance to Yale New Haven Children’s Intensive Care Unit.
“On Thursday, June 20th, the incredible medical team at Yale performed an almost 8-hour brain surgery on our Chloe,” Cara McDermott posted on the GoFundMe page that she organized. “They believe they were able to remove 99 percent of the mass, which they described as larger than a baseball.”

As for that remaining 1 percent, doctors and Chloe’s mom, dad and older sister remain hopeful, McDermott told Patch.
Chloe was sent to Blythedale Children’s Hospital in Valhalla, NY, immediately after her surgery to begin her rehabilitation efforts. Radiation therapy — the first of 33 treatments — is scheduled to begin July 22. Neither Chloe nor her mom have been home to Monroe since she was first admitted to the hospital.

“She says she won’t go home until Chloe goes home,” McDermott said.
The online campaign, “Support Chloe’s Brave Journey to Recovery,” has raised over $56,400 on 412 donations since it began June 22. All funds collected will be used directly for Chloe’s recovery, medical needs and related costs, according to the campaign.
“While Chloe’s surgery went very well, there is still a long road ahead. Chloe will begin radiation in about two weeks and continue to amaze us all,” McDermott wrote in a July 1 update.
