'Christmas Vacation' Comes To Life In Warminster

WARMINSTER, PA —The RV was parked in front of Ashley’s Furniture on Saturday and might have had plans to stay a month if not for the Warminster Township police car parked in front of it.

Around the RV and inside the store, people posed for pictures and dressed as characters of the holiday classic “Christmas Vacation” movie, starring Chevy Chase.

They also formed a line that twisted throughout the Street Road store as about 2,000 people dropped by to see the RV outside and pose for pictures with “Cousin Eddie” —played by Actor Randy Quaid —inside the store.

During the movie, “Cousin Eddie” tells Chase’s Clark Griswold that the RV might be staying in their driveway through the Christmas holidays and into the next month.

The 74-year-old actor, who played the crazy cousin in several of the National Lampoon movies —including the original “Vacation” —greeted those lined up with handshakes and a few words about his role in the movie and said on a podcast that he was amazed how it still resonates with people over the years.

While Quaid sported a long white beard and wore a baseball cap, he showed no signs of “Cousin Eddie.”

But that didn’t stop attendees from dressing like he and other characters from the movie and wearing Griswold’s Chicago Blackhawks jersey and other T-shirts with slogans from the movie across them.

Several people were wearing white robes and a winter hat that Quaid wears during an outside scene with his RV in the movie. And two people dressed up as “Uncle Lewis” and “Aunt Bethany.”

“Christmas Vacation” came out in 1989 and featured the slapstick comedy Chase was known for in his movies and on “Saturday Night Live.” The movie has inspired the theme for various Christmas lights and decoration displays over the years.
