Brexit bind: Hard border with Ireland could be ‘unavoidable’ under UK’s customs plans
A hard border with Ireland may be inevitable now that the UK has ruled out any form of customs union with the EU to allow it to pursue an independent trade policy, experts have warned.
Paul Verrips, head of EU affairs at British advisory firm Customs Connect, said the UK’s move would inevitably require border checks taking place at some point between Ireland and the UK after Brexit.
“If there is no customs union, my logic would say there is a border…at the end of the day it will come down to that,” said Mr Verrips, who warned that the Irish question risked being “overlooked and over-simplified” in the Brexit debate.
