13th seed Anastasija Sevastova ended the run of Canadian teen Bianca Andreescu, while 12th seed Elise Mertens defeated Margarita Gasparyan in straight sets. The second-highest seed playing the day session, the fourth seeded , too, punched her way forcefully into the third round defeating Tamara Zidansek in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.
The Japanese player had no problems winning the first set, but found herself down an early break in the second. While Zidansek did consolidate, she was not able to hold off Osaka for long, who broke back the Slovenian to level the set.
At four-all, Zidansek was broken for the second time and while Osaka had some difficulty in closing out the match, she staved off her opponent long enough to successfully make her way through. Up next for Osaka is the 28th seed Su-Wei Hsieh.
