EDMOND, Okla. –The Division II Wrestling Coaches Association released its first regular season top-20 poll on Wednesday. Augustana earned the No. 16 spot, dropping one spot from the preseason rankings that was released Oct. 27.
The Vikings’ accumulated 45 points, only two points behind Western State (Colo.) who came in at the No. 15 spot. Augustana also had two wrestlers that earned individual rankings in their respective weight classes. TJ North (125 pounds) remains as the No. 1 spot, while Jayd Docken (197 pounds) jumped up two spots, coming in at No. 5.
North is the defending 125-pound champion in Super Region #3 and was the national runner-up at the NCAA Championships last season opening the season with a 4-2 record after tabbing a fourth-place finish at the Daktronics Open on Nov. 2. He was an All-NSIC selection last season after going 8-0 against NSIC opponents and finished the season 33-4 overall, including a 22-1 mark against Division II opponents.
Docken, a native of Winner, S.D., opens his senior season with an 8-3 record after placing first at the Dakota Wesleyan Open and second at the Holiday Inn Open both competing unattached. Docken earned second team All-NSIC honors for the second straight season last year after posting a 17-5 record while losing just one bout in conference competition for a 7-1 mark.
The Vikings return to action Thursday, Dec. 4 in Mitchell, S.D. with Northwestern at 4 p.m., followed by contest with host Dakota Wesleyan at 6 p.m. Augustana also squares off with South Dakota State at the Sanford Pentagon on Sunday, Dec. 7 at 2 p.m.
