The U.S. Women’s Mountain Running Team (USMRT) was finalized Sunday at the Loon Mountain Race in New Hampshire. One USMRT veteran and three newcomers will be making the trek to Italy this September for the World Mountain Running Championships.
Leading the way was Morgan Arritola, 26, the 2010 Nordic skiing Olympian from Ketchum, Idaho, who won the five-mile uphill race in 46:16 to make her first USMRT. She was followed by Melody Fairchild, 38, of Denver, Colorado, who clocked a 47:06 to make her first team, and returning team member Brandy Erholtz, 34, of Evergreen, Colorado, who was third in 48:06. Rounding out the 2012 team was Stevie Kremer, 28, of Crested Butte, Colorado, who made her first team with a 48:21, fourth-place finish.
Narrowly missing the team was 2011 World and U.S. Mountain Running Champion Kasie Enman, 32, of Huntington, Vermont. Though all of the top five runners went under Enman’s Loon Mountain course record of 50:58 from last year, this year’s course was shortened 0.40 miles to more accurately reflect the length of the World Championship course.

La Sportiva Vail Hill Climb
Coloradoans swept the men’s—and nearly the women’s—races at the 7.5-mile Vail Hill Climb in Vail, Colorado Saturday. Ryan Hafer of Colorado Springs, Colorado, won the race in a time of 49:20, over two minutes ahead of Golden, Colorado’s Jason Delaney, who finished second in 51:27. Over two minutes behind Delaney was third-place Simon Gutierrez of Colorado Springs, who clocked a 53: 42.
In the women’s race, Erica Baron of Los Alamos, New Mexico, won with a time of 1:01:39, well ahead of runner-up Eva Hagen of Colorado Springs, who finished in 1:07:41. Baron and Hagen were 22nd and 52nd overall, respectively. Vail’s own Mia Stockdale finished third (58th overall) in 1:08:08.

Creemore Vertical Challenge
Corey Smith of Nottawa, Ontario, won the Creemore Vertical Challenge 50K outside Creemore, Ontario, Saturday. His time of 4:06:41 put him over six minutes ahead of runner-up Rob Tranter, who finished in 4:12:55. 2011 Creemore 50k winner Rob Vanderwerf finished third in 4:23:05. In the women’s race, Tanya Porcellato won with a time of 4:40:24, good for 6th overall. She was followed by Carmela Vergura, who earned runner-up honors and finished 8th overall in 5:07:13. Kat Klewey finished third (10th overall) in 5:10:36.
In the 25K, Mike Tickner of Kitchener, Ontario, won with a time of 1:42:46, narrowly outpacing Mississauga, Ontario’s Kyle Aitken, who finished in 1:42:57. Jim Seeds of Waterford, Ontario, finished third in 1:54:35. In the women’s division, Chantal Warriner won and finished 13th overall in 2:09:36, nearly nine minutes ahead of Kelly Rupoli, who finished second (21st overall) in 2:18:16. Jade Penwright-Holmes finished third (27th overall) in 2:22:22.

Afton Trail Run
Joe Moore of Minneapolis, Minnesota, got a win and a new course record at the Afton 25K in Minnesota’s Afton State Park Saturday with a time of 1:37:10. The win also earned Moore—the 2011 USATF 10K Trail Champion—the USATF-Minnesota Trail title. In second was the previous course-record holder, Ben Kampf of Minneapolis, who finished in 1:38:52. Former NCAA cross-country champion Josh Moen of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, finished third in 1:40:20.
In the women’s race, Emma Lee of St. Paul, Minnesota, narrowly missed a course record en route to winning the Minnesota Trail Championship with a time of 1:55:13 (good for eighth overall). Melissa Gacek of White Bear Lake, Minnesota, finished second (11th overall) in 1:59:41, and Anna French—only 15 years old—of Plymouth, Minnesota finished third (13th overall) in 2:00:01.
