Another Jets offensive lineman may be finished for year

Brandon Shell spent his Sunday morning undergoing an MRI exam after suffering a potentially serious knee injury in Saturday’s loss to the Texans.

The Jets right tackle was blocking in the third quarter when his legs got rolled up on by the pile and he went down in pain. Shell had to be taken off the field on a cart and was replaced by Brent Qvale.

Coach Todd Bowles was unsure of the severity of the injury as of Sunday morning, but with only two games left, Shell’s season could be over.

“Not yet, but I don’t think he’ll be back anytime soon,” Bowles said.

The 6-foot-5, 324-pound Shell had started 29 games for the Jets over the last three seasons. He missed four games last year because of shoulder and neck injuries and a concussion. The 26-year-old is signed through next season, though that could get cut into depending on the extent of his injury.

The Jets already are playing without starting left guard James Carpenter, who was declared out for the season after injuring his shoulder in Week 10.

Overall Saturday, the Jets’ offensive line limited a tough Texans defensive front to three sacks, two of them from J.J. Watt.

“Those guys are talented and athletic. I thought our guys fought hard,” Bowles said. “We ran the ball a little bit and we gave Sam [Darnold] some time. Sometimes he had to scramble to make plays, but they competed their butts off and they held their own.”

For the first time this season, all three Jets quarterbacks were active.

After spending the first nine weeks on the practice squad, Davis Webb had dressed for three games to back up Josh McCown when Darnold was out with his foot injury. But the former Giants QB earned his way back into a uniform Saturday with Darnold starting.

“Davis had a good week of practice,” Bowles said. “With all the guys being down, we didn’t have too many guys to dress. Rewarding him for just practicing well and showing that he’s doing a good job.”

Bowles said the two timeouts he had to use on defense in the first half were due to “personnel mishap[s].”

“It’s frustrating, but with the younger guys, they’ve just got to get on the same page,” he said.

Wide receiver Rishard Matthews was set to get an MRI exam Sunday for a hamstring injury. Darryl Roberts, who has been filling in at safety, also left the game early with a sprained toe.
