Another cyclist killed on city streets amid spike in rider deaths
A cyclist was fatally struck by a box truck in Greenpoint Tuesday afternoon — becoming the 17th bike rider killed in the city this year, just hours after the 16th died in Staten Island.
The 58-year-old, whose name has not been released pending family notification, was on the southbound side of McGuiness Avenue at 3:51 p.m. when he was hit by the truck headed in the same direction, according to police.
EMS rushed the man to Bellevue Hospital, where he died, cops said.
It was unclear if the man was moving when he was hit or had fallen off his bike, according to the NYPD. No arrests have been made and the department is still investigating.

The death came just four hours after a 17-year-old cyclist was hit and killed in Staten Island, bringing the total to 17 biker deaths this year — 10 more than in the same period last year.
Mayor Bill de Blasio called the uptick an “emergency” earlier this month.
