SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The Maverick wrestling team concluded the 2015-16 season with a bang on Saturday, finishing with three All-Americans and tied for ninth in the nation as a team.
Malcolm Allen (R-Sr., 285 lbs.) capped off his Maverick career with a national runner-up finish and an appearance in the national finals. In his semifinal matchup, Allen defeated Donnell Walker (Maryville) by a definitive 9-4 decision. Allen would go on to face Joseph Fagiano (California Baptist) in the national finals in front of a great Sioux Falls atmosphere. Allen took an early lead with a takedown, but gave up a late takedown with nearfall points to be defeated by decision versus Fagiano, 6-3 to finish second in the nation.
Matt Mincey (R-Sr., 157 lbs.) won his way through the consolation bracket on Saturday to finish third nationally. In his first match of the day, Mincey bested Greg Hegarty (Maryville) in an 8-1 decision. Mincey secured a matchup in the third-place match after defeating Jordan Rinken (Upper Iowa) by decision, 11-4. In his final match as a Maverick, Mincey would square off for the second time against defending national champion Jonatan Rivera (Notre Dame) for third-place. In an intense match, Mincey would ultimately have his arm raised at the end with a 5-3 sudden victory over Rivera for a third-place finish.
Adam Cooling (Jr., 174 lbs.) joined Mincey as the second Maverick to place third nationally and the third to reach All-American status this season. In his semifinal match against top-ranked and undefeated Nick Becker (UW-Parkside), Cooling dropped a heartbreaker in sudden victory by a score of 3-1. In his first consolation match, Cooling went on to defeat Austin Harris (Western State) in a 5-2 decision effort. In his final match of the season, Cooling would have a rematch versus Calvin Ochs (Nebraska-Kearney), who had previously defeated him at the National Duals back in January. Cooling would take round two with a decisive 8-2 decision and a third-place national finish as a junior.
The Mavericks conclude their season with three All-Americans, the most since the 2010-11 season, where they also had three. Minnesota State also tied for ninth in the team standings, the highest since the 2012-13 season where the team finished eighth.
