Alex Smith out of hospital after scary complications

Alex Smith’s recovery continues.

The Redskins quarterback, who suffered a broken tibia and fibula against the Texans in Week 11, has been released from the hospital, according to ESPN, who cited league sources.

Smith, 34, was said to be dealing with a “devastating complication” from leg surgery, per “The Sports Junkies” on 106.7 The Fan. NFL Network also reported the quarterback was dealing with an infection. Amid trying health struggles, it appears there is “some optimism, but hardly certainty” that Smith can return to playing.

The Redskins’ crop of signal-callers continues to shrink, with backup Colt McCoy also out with a broken leg. Journeyman Mark Sanchez was pulled from last week’s 40-16 loss to the Giants, with Josh Johnson taking the reins. He will get the start against the Jaguars on Sunday.

As for Smith, he and his family request privacy at this time.

“On behalf of Alex Smith, we appreciate all of the concerns and prayers over the injury he incurred on Nov. 18 against the Houston Texans,” the Redskins said in a statement. “Although this is a serious injury, Alex and his family remain strong. We would ask that everyone please honor the Smith family’s request for privacy at this time.”

Smith signed a four-year, $94 million in the offseason.
