Betting on GAA games restricted, while Christy Ring winners will compete in All-Ireland qualifiers

Kevin O’Brien reports from Croke Park

GAA CONGRESS HAS passed a motion which strictly prohibits players or members of team management from betting on the outcome of a game they are involved in.

Motion 1 adopts the rule that anyone who is part of a county side who places a bet on a match they’re taking part in will now face a ban, with the minimum sanction faced an eight-week suspension.

A fine, disqualification, and expulsion from the Association may also be considered. The first motion passed with an overwhelming 234 votes to 2 majority.

Wexford delegate Tony Dempsey spoke in favour of passing the motion, describing gambling as ‘a silent killer.’

Meanwhile, Motion 3 has passed with a ‘yes’ vote of 95%.

It means the Christy Ring Cup champions will compete in the All-Ireland SHC qualifiers in the same year they win the Christy Ring Cup.
