McHugh hits the net in Donegal victory away to 14-man Cavan

Donegal 1-16
Cavan 0-11

DONEGAL HAD TO rescue a draw at home to Dublin last Sunday but they had no problem in picking up full points tonight at Kingspan Breffni Park and condemned Cavan to another Allianz Division 1 football league defeat.

Promoted last season from the second tier, Cavan again endured a tough night against an elite county as their wait for a success in Division 1 this spring goes on.

They were hit with a hammer blow in the first half when captain Killian Clarke was sent-off in a game where they trailed 0-5 to 0-0 after 13 minutes.

Cavan did bounce back to be only two adrift at the break –  0-6 to 0-4 – before Eoin McHugh was found in space to fire home the only goal of the game for Donegal in the early stages of the second half.

Donegal had encouraging scoring contributions from Ciaran Thompson (0-5) and Jamie Brennan (0-3) while Michael Murphy and Hugh McFadden chipped in with a brace of points apiece.

Gearoid McKiernan, Seanie Johnston, Dara McVeety and Conor Madden were Cavan’s principal scorers but Mattie McGleenan saw his side beaten as Rory Gallagher’s team deservedly departed with the spoils.
