Brett Favre: Eagles should go with Nick Foles over Carson Wentz
Brett Favre thinks Eagles head coach Doug Pederson has got it all wrong.
The Packers great said on SiriusXM earlier this week that Philadelphia should go with Nick Foles over Carson Wentz after he led the Eagles to a Super Bowl last year.
Pederson — who is close friends with Favre — has indicated that he will go with Wentz moving forward and that it is unlikely both quarterbacks will remain on the roster.
“No disrespect at all to Carson Wentz,” Farve said, according to NBC Sports. “I think he’s already proven that he’s a great quarterback. Totally different than Nick Foles. Nick Foles, to me, is more of a Brady-esque type quarterback. Very limited in what he can do but very, very good in what he does.
“He’s a pure pocket passer and he’s great at dishing it out and he’s proven that he’s clutch. He did it this past week, he did it last year, he’s done it time and time again, and he’s proven that he can win the big games.”
Foles helmed the Eagles after Wentz tore his ACL in Week 14 of last season, guiding the team to a championship. Wentz took over his starting job when the 2018 season began, but another injury in December allowed Foles to take the role for the Eagles’ last three regular-season games and two playoff games.
Philadelphia’s season ended on Sunday in a 20-14 loss to the Saints.
Pederson has made it clear, though, that Wentz is the team’s starting quarterback going forward.
“Carson is the quarterback going forward,” Pederson told reporters at a year-end press conference. “And in Nick’s case, listen, we would love to have everybody back throughout the roster. But as I’ve said many, many times, it’s not about one guy. It’s about the team. We’re going to do what’s best for the team.”
Pederson’s friendship with Favre goes back to his time as a backup quarterback on the Packers between 1995 and 1998 and again 2001 through 2004.
The Eagles could put a franchise tag on Foles, but would likely only do so in order to trade him.
Multiple teams have already expressed interest in Foles, according to reports, including the Jaguars. They have hired John DeFilippo, who was the Eagles quarterback coach in 2016-17, as their defensive coordinator.
