LANDOVER, Md. — Finally, here came The Kid. Rookie Kyle Lauletta entered at the start of the fourth quarter for his NFL debut.
He should have considered a U-turn.
Lauletta was 0-for-5 with an interception.
The cries for him to start before the season ends should be silenced.
“Well, obviously I didn’t do very well, but hey, I just don’t want to take anything away from the team and the performance they had tonight,” Lauletta said after Giants 40, Redskins 16.
Lauletta admitted to some obligatory nerves.
“There’s no excuses,” he said. “Obviously I didn’t execute like I wanted to, but I’ll be better next time.”
Following a handoff to Wayne Gallman, he rolled right for his first pass and threw incomplete for Russell Shepard by the sideline.
Then he looked over the middle for Shepard on his next series and threw it to linebacker Mason Foster instead.
“Guy made a great play,” Lauletta said. “I think he just read my eyes and kinda got a jump on it.”
His third-and-6 throw over the middle on his next possession for Evan Engram nearly was intercepted.
A bomb down the left sidelines for Gallman wasn’t even close.
Lauletta figured his time would come when the Giants raced to a 34-0 halftime lead. It was 40-0 when he entered.
“Anytime I don’t do well, regardless of whether it’s two snaps, 20 snaps, it doesn’t matter, I’m gonna be disappointed if I don’t complete every pass I throw,” Lauletta said. “I had opportunities, and we couldn’t execute so …”
