Giants report card: Where did this offense come from?

Grades from the Giants’ 40-16 win over the Redskins on Sunday:

Offense

Saquon Barkley is getting better the later in the season it gets. He needed only 14 rushing attempts to amass a season-high 170 yards, and his runs of 78 yards (for a touchdown) and 52 yards were breathtaking. Eli Manning compiled a passer rating of 132.0 and tossed three touchdown passes. After some early struggles (really), the Giants did not miss injured Odell Beckham Jr. Chad Wheeler labored early against Ryan Kerrigan. Evan Engram (3-77) got back into the flow. The Giants did not have one accepted penalty on offense, which is tremendous. Rookie QB Kyle Lauletta made his NFL debut and went 0-for-5 with an interception.

Grade: A-plus

Defense

S Curtis Riley got things started with the easiest interception he will ever get — the ball was deflected to him by teammate Kareem Martin — for a pick-six. LB Alec Ogletree (yet another interception) continues to provide a spark in the second half of the season. The focus was on RB Adrian Peterson (10-16), who was completely nullified. Five sacks of overmatched Mark Sanchez, including 1.5 for Olivier Vernon. S Michael Thomas had a late interception to keep the Redskins out of the end zone. Good thing QB Josh Johnson (195 passing yards, 45 rushing yards) did not start the game.

Grade: A

Special teams

Riley Dixon put a 49-yard punt down on the Washington 2-yard line. Jawill Davis was strong on punt returns, making good decisions and going forward for positive yards. In the third quarter, Aldrick Rosas missed his first extra point this season. He had been 25-for-25. He was 2-for-2 on fields goals, hitting from 35 and 23 yards.

Grade: B-plus

Coaching

No Odell, no problem for Pat Shurmur, whose offense put up 33 points in three quarters, including 27 in a torrid second quarter. Shurmur has created a positive attitude, not easy after the 1-7 first half of the season. Getting Lauletta in for the final quarter was smart. James Bettcher’s defense completely overwhelmed Sanchez, cutting off his running game and giving him no room to breathe in the pocket.
