As Jets well know, picking right new coach is an elusive mystery

The Jets are about to embark on solving the riddle…

John Harbaugh, whose future with the Ravens has been hotly debated in recent weeks, got a nice vote of confidence from the team.

“John Harbaugh will continue as our head coach for the 2019 season, and he and we are working on an extension to his existing contract, which expires after the 2019 season,” the team said in a statement released on Twitter.

Harbaugh, a talked-about choice to take over on the Jets’ sideline, led Baltimore to a Super Bowl title in 2012, but the team has been mired in mediocrity in recent seasons. The Ravens are in the AFC wild card chase this season at 8-6, thanks in part to having the NFL’s top defense while transitioning from long-time quarterback Joe Flacco to rookie Lamar Jackson.

Jets coach Todd Bowles is expected to be fired at season’s end, with the team looking for someone to help guide rookie quarterback Sam Darnold’s development. Other intriguing names on the market include former Packers coach Mike McCarthy, Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, John DeFilippo — recently fired as the Vikings’ offensive coordinator — and University of Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley.
