Donald Trump calls NFL player Edwin Jackson’s death ‘disgraceful’

President Donald Trump took to Twitter on Tuesday morning and called the accident that claimed the life of Indianapolis Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson "disgraceful."

"So disgraceful that a person illegally in our country killed @Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson. This is just one of many such preventable tragedies. We must get the Dems to get tough on the Border, and with illegal immigration, FAST!," Mr Trump wrote.

Manuel Orrego-Savala was driving the truck that struck and killed Jackson and ride-sharing operator Jeffrey Monroe.

Mr Orrego-Savala had been deported twice – in 2007 and 2009 – according to Indiana State Police.

The 37-year-old, who had been using the alias Alex Cabrera Gonsales, is a citizen of Guatemala.

Orrego-Savala was arrested after trying to flee the scene on foot, according to police, who also said he was intoxicated.

He is currently being held in the Marion County jail in Indiana, and police are working with US federal immigration officials to determine their next step.

Police are also working with the prosecutor’s office to file criminal charges.

The crash happened shortly before 4 am along I-70, according to the Indianapolis Star. Police said Jackson, 26, and Mr Monroe, 54, were standing near a stopped vehicle when a pickup truck drove onto the highway shoulder and struck them both.

Police believe that Mr Monroe was driving and had pulled to the side of the road and got out of the car to assist Jackson, who became ill.

Both men were pronounced dead at the scene by the Marion County Coroner’s Office.
