Minneapolis, Minn. — Minnesota State finished the Auggie-Adidas Invitational with three first place winners and a total of eight Mavericks placing in top-six positions in their weight class.
Brandon Moen (Fr., 184 lbs.) posted a perfect 4-0 record to take first in the Gold 184 lbs. bracket. The Owatonna, Minnesota native got off to a strong start with a 15-7 major decision in his first match and followed that up with a 7-3 decision and another major decision of 13-4. Moen competed against Luther College’s John Keifer in his final match where he won on a 4-3 decision to place first in the Gold 184 lbs. bracket.
Cooper Siebrecht (Fr., 149 lbs.) wrestled his way to the top of the Silver 149-pound weight class on an impressive 4-0 record at the Open. Siebrecht began his day with a 19-1 technical fall and continued his dominant start by pinning his second opponent in 0:40 in the quarterfinal round. After another win on a 9-3 decision, Siebrecht was pitted against Tyler Zeman of RCTC in the final round. There, Cooper won by a fall in 5:12 to take first place in the Silver bracket.
Brody Nielsen (Fr., 157 lbs.) continued his dominant streak to win his second straight tournament in the Silver 157 lbs. bracket. Nielsen began the tournament with an 8-3 decision win, and then rattled off two quick victories in falls of 1:01 and 0:47. Nielsen wrestled against Augsburg’s Boone Young in the final match where he pinned him in 4:53 to take first in the Silver 157-pound weight class.
Kolbe O’Brien (Fr., 141 lbs.) and Seth Elwood (Sr., 165 lbs.) had successful days in Minneapolis as they both wrestled to a 3-1 record to make it to the finals in their weight classes. O’Brien finished in second place in the Gold 141 lbs. bracket, while Elwood finished second in the Gold 165 lbs. bracket.
Trevor Turriff (Fr., 184 lbs.) wrestled against a formidable opponent in Upper Iowa’s Dalton Hahn and won on a 14-12 decision. Unfortunately, after the big win against the #6 wrestler in the nation, an illness forced Turriff out of the tournament as a medical default.
The remaining Mavericks to place in Minneapolis include Louie Sanders (Jr., 141 lbs.) third, Tony Heng (So. 149 lbs.) sixth, and Daniel Close (Sr., 157 lbs.) fifth, while Max Villnow (Fr., 285 lbs.) won his consolation bracket.
