Orangutan Bites Volunteer At Florida's Jungle Island

MIAMI — An orangutan bit a volunteer at Florida’s Jungle Island attraction Wednesday afternoon in Miami. The victim was not seriously injured, according to a park official.

“An experienced volunteer working with our orangutan enrichment program received a non-life threatening injury as a result of an orangutan 3 p.m. today,” Managing Director Christopher Gould of the park told Patch. Jungle Island is located at 1111 Parrot Jungle Trail just off the MacArthur Causeway between Miami and Miami Beach.

The park, which first opened in 1936, has recently undergone a transformation to include a wind tunnel-powered outdoor skydiving simulator, a 600-foot zip line and animal encounters.

Gould said that the injured volunteer was quickly helped by on-site emergency personnel.

“The internal emergency response team at Jungle Island and primate keepers were swift to the aid of the volunteer who has been transported to the hospital,” Gould added.
