Jean-Claude Juncker on Monday gave his preferred choice as the next president of the United States, and it’s not Donald Trump.

The European Commission president told French morning show Télématin: “I have a preference for a candidate, or should I say a female candidate,” before quickly adding that giving his public backing was “out of my competences.”

“Who am I to interfere in the U.S. democratic debate,” the former prime minister of Luxembourg said, adding “I was already imprudent to answer your question.”

Asked about Juncker’s not-so-subtle endorsement of Hillary Clinton and if that support extended to the entire Commission, his chief spokesman, Margaritis Schinas, said “when the president talks, we stay quiet.”

Trump on Sunday claimed that the European Union was created as a way to “beat the United States when it comes to making money.”
