Andre Agassi makes case for Lleyton Hewitt in Australian tennis controversy

In an interview to AAP, the eight-time Grand Slam winner commented on the very sensitive situation between Lleyton Hewitt and Bernard Tomic. Hewitt said that Tomic would not be a part of the Australian Davis Cup team, of which Hewitt is the captain.

I dont know about the politics and what-not that go on and as Davis Cup captain what his responsibilities are, said Agassi. I can only imagine. I only saw it as a player. I probably took a lot for granted and I said regretful things in my own life about captains when things didnt go the way I wanted them to go.

Lleyton, hes been nothing but a competitor for this sport. Ive always respected him. Hes a fighter and Im sure hes going to fight on behalf of making his team as good as possible. Im sure hes a pretty smart dude as well when it comes to that.

Its not easy if you dont get the support from certain players, but Lleyton has won more battles than that. Agassi also commented on Tomic and Nick Kyrgioss attitudes and how they can improve: I try to highlight just how difficult it is to grow up in the public eye and the one thing you hope for from a distance is that these moments in their life are appreciated.

They need to learn (from experiences). If you lose and you dont learn something from it, thats all it is, a loss. If you say something regretful and you dont learn from it then all you did was hurt as result.

You just hope they figure it out with as little pain as possible. Agassi also spoke about the Australians womens no. 1 Ashleigh Barty, whom he met a lot of years ago. I remember and Im always rooting for her, thats for sure, said the American.

I unfortunately didnt get a chance to be on the court with her for any period of time. Most of the conversations just had to do with what the crazy life of tennis throws at you. ALSO READ: Rafael Nadal: Worse players than David Ferrer won a Grand Slam title
