CA Lottery Winners Making Billions, Losing Millions In 2024

CALIFORNIA — Over the past 12 months, the California Lottery changed the lives of more than 100 people, making some instant millionaires and giving others a much-needed boost, according to the California Lottery.

This year, a millionaire was made on a Mega Millions ticket sold at a Napa Bowling alley, and one store sold two winning tickets, and the same man claims he bought both winning tickets but misplaced one of them. The prizewinner could only claim half of the $395 million as of the end of 2024, in a story yet to be finished.

“For each ticket sold, the retailer earned a bonus of $987,500 for a total of more than $1.9 million – the highest bonus ever received by a single retailer in California Lottery history,” CA Lottery spokesperson Carolyn Becker told Patch.

Unclaimed Funds, The Biggest Losers Of 2024 Lottery:

There’s an old lotto saying: You can’t win if you don’t play, but in 2024, that saying should be amended: You can’t win if you don’t keep your ticket!

In the 2024 fiscal year from July to June, the total amount of unclaimed lottery ticket winnings resulted in $67.1 million of unclaimed lottery winnings, Becker said.

That is a whopping $15.3 million more than was unclaimed in 2023.

The latter half of 2024 is already on track to be record setting for unclaimed prizes. When two jackpot -winning tickets were sold at the same gas station, only one was claimed, and the other expired with the winner claiming he deserves both halves of the jackpot. He claims to have bought both winning tickets but lost one. The lost ticket expired, and a lawsuit is pending.
