RivCo Probation Officer's Death Confirmed After Las Vegas Standoff

RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA — A former Riverside County probation corrections officer under investigation for allegedly advertising for sale obscene matter involving a minor is believed to be the same man who was shot dead earlier this month by a law enforcement officer in Las Vegas.

Cesar Reyes II, 26, was identified as the man killed following a police standoff at the South Point resort in the 9700 block of South Las Vegas Boulevard, according to a Dec. 12 media briefing from Assistant Sheriff Dori Koren of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

The Las Vegas incident unfolded shortly after 5 p.m. Dec. 8 when Las Vegas Metropolitan police received a call regarding a suicidal man barricaded at the resort.

The man, identified as Reyes, left a suicide note at his home in Indio, which his family found earlier, Koren said. After determining that Reyes was staying at the South Point resort, hotel security was contacted. When the officials tried to conduct a welfare check on Reyes, they found his hotel room door locked with no answer.

Security attempted to force entry into the room but heard what they believed to be the racking of a firearm, Koren said.

At that point, security stopped the efforts and called in the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

Once at the scene, LVMPD officers also tried to contact Reyes but were unsuccessful, so SWAT and crisis negotiators were dispatched.

After several hours with no response from Reyes, SWAT officers used an explosive to gain entry into the locked hotel room. The blast caused Reyes to finally exit, but he was armed with a shotgun and tried to escape down a hall, Koren said.

Authorities commanded Reyes to stop and drop the weapon, but he didn’t comply.

The incident, which was captured on video, ended when Reyes allegedly charged at LVMPD SWAT Officer Zachary Adam, 45, and his partner. Verbal commands were again issued, which Reyes ignored, Koren said.

Adam fired one round at Reyes, striking him. The Indio man died at the scene. In addition to the pump-action Winchester shotgun, a Glock 26 9 mm semi-automatic handgun was found on Reyes, according to Koren.

Riverside County jail records show that Cesar Mayel Reyes II, 26, of Indio was arrested at 4 p.m. Dec. 6 on Oasis Street in Indio and released on $30,000 bail the next day. He faced two charges of obscene matter.

On Dec. 13, Riverside County Probation Department Chief Christopher Wright confirmed the death of Probation Corrections Officer Cesar Reyes II.

“Due to the circumstances” surrounding his death, further details were not being released, Wright said.

Mourning bands for Reyes were not authorized, according to Wright.

Riverside County spokesperson Brooke Federico told KESQ that Reyes was placed on administrative leave beginning Dec. 6.
