Beverly Teachers Strike: School Closed For 6th Day On Monday

BEVERLY, MA — The Beverly Teachers Association is hoping a 1,000-student march planned for Monday will help spur movement in stalled negotiations as classrooms remained closed for a sixth straight day.

“Management that will no longer bargain with us has no interest in opening schools,” BTA co-
President Andrea Sherman said in a statement on Sunday. “We are no longer surprised. It is evident to all of us that the mayor wants pain from educators.”

“They are waiting for the courts to punish us.”

The BTA faces escalating fines that began at $50,000 per day and were set to increase by $10,000 per day.

“We will continue to fight for what’s right and fight for our students,” Sherman said, ” and after this week we know the parents of this community are willing to fight for us too.

School Committee Chair Rachael Abell said on Sunday that the committee “continued to put forth strong offers” that met the requests of the BTA.

“As we prepare for students to be out of school again tomorrow, the School Committee is beginning to have the challenging conversations about how and where to make up the six school days our students will have missed,” Abell said in a community update Sunday night. “We remain committed to bringing our students and educators back as soon as possible and continue to offer the opportunity for educators to return to their classrooms and resume bargaining after school hours until we can reach an agreement.”
