Inspired By Grandparents, Hillsborough Eagle Scout Builds Benches
HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — Inspired by his grandparents love for walking, Hillsborough Scout Athithya Gounder dedicated his Eagle Scout project to building benches in the Township.
Gounder joined the Boy Scouts in fifth grade and has continued into his senior year at Hillsborough High School.
As part of his Eagle Scout project, Gounder installed benches along Amsterdam Drive.

“There’s a lot of senior citizens in our community and out walking in the evening or in the morning, and there’s not a lot of benches along the side of the road,” said Gounder to Patch.
“I wanted to build benches for them. It’s also kind of personal, since my grandparents also love to come and walk, especially when they come in the summer, so I wanted to at least build something that had a personal connection,” said Gounder.

He started a GoFundMe where he raised close to $4,000 and worked with the Township Parks and Recreation Department to purchase five benches.
Gounder installed three benches this week near the soccer field and will install the other two benches as they come in near the tennis courts.
He worked with volunteers and the Township to install the benches. The Township drilled the holes and Gounder poured the concrete, set in the benches, and cleaned up.
Gounder’s grandparents were very proud of his efforts to install the benches.
“I called them up, and I explained it to them, and they were really happy,” said Gounder. “Especially since they have a lot of friends here, they’re always talking about this, and the fact that it was something that I was able to get done, they’re really proud of that.”
Overall, Gounder is happy with his efforts to help improve the community.

“I feel relieved, first of all, but mainly, I’m really happy that I was able to give back to the community with my project,” said Gounder. “There’s a lot of options that I had swirling around, but, you know, I feel like being able to do something that could directly impact my grandparents was really important.”
