The 20-year-old’s catchy song of the summer broke records Monday by remaining on top of the music magazine’s “Hot 100” list for 17 weeks in a row. That’s more than any other song in Billboard’s 60 years of keeping tabs on tunes, beating out “Despacito,” by Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber, plus “One Sweet Day,” sung by Mariah Carey with Boyz II Men, which both saw 16 weeks at Number One.
Nas’ Hall of Fame achievement is made even sweeter by the fact that Billboard booted him from its “Hot Country Songs” chart in March, disqualifying him for falling outside the crooning genre. “ ‘Old Town Road’ does not embrace enough elements of today’s country music to chart in its current version,” read a statement by the music pub to Rolling Stone.
Infectious trap beats and a sample from Nine Inch Nails’ song “34 Ghosts IV” may have caused noses to turn up at Billboard, but it didn’t stop the song from being streamed 72.5 million times last week, according to Nielsen.
The breakout rapper from Georgia has re-released the song with a chorus of characters including Wal-Mart yodeler Mason Ramsey, electronic musician Diplo, rapper Young Thug, RM, the lead vocalist of the viral K-pop band BTS and most famously Billy Ray Cyrus, who shares credit on the record-breaking track.
While the song sparked debate over straddling categories, it’s clear Lil Nas X got the last “Yeehaw!”
