Trump delays illegal immigrant deportation plan

President Trump has called off his plan to start deporting up to 2,000 illegal immigrant families — for now.

“At the request of Democrats, I have delayed the Illegal Immigration Removal Process (Deportation) for two weeks,” he tweeted Saturday.

The pause will give time “to see if the Democrats and Republicans can get together and work out a solution to the Asylum and Loophole problems at the Southern Border,” Trump continued.
“If not, Deportations start!”

Earlier Saturday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi urged Trump to cancel his plan to have Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers arrest and deport illegal immigrants from 10 cities including New York, Chicago, Baltimore, Houston, Miami and Los Angeles.

“Families belong together,” Pelosi said in a statement. “These families are hard-working members of our communities and our country.”

Democrats and Republicans have been gridlocked over a host of immigration issues, from funding for border enforcement to the legal status of those who illegally entered the US as children.

Trump’s two-week delay recalled the tariff threat he issued against Mexico on May 30 — which appeared to pay off a week later, when Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obradoro agreed to crack down on migrants travelling through his country to reach the US.

But three administration officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told the Associated Press that the ICE raids were canceled because details had leaked to the media, jeopardizing officer safety.
