Summer’s hottest beauty trends, from neon makeup to bouncy bobs
From retro-inspired hairstyles to superbright neon eyeshadow, a look at the coolest, easiest beauty trends heating up the season.
Beachy twists
Margot Robbie’s thin, face-framing braids at the Cannes Film Festival photo call for “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” pay homage to her character in the movie: Sharon Tate rocked similar pretty plaits at the same festival in 1968 — and they fit seamlessly into 2019.
“It feels modern because it’s not too done,” Aaron Grenia, a celebrity stylist and the co-founder of haircare brand IGK, tells The Post. He says the braids are ideal for the dog days of summer — they keep hair off sweaty faces and mask any humidity-induced frizz.
To try the look, blow your hair dry using a round brush to smooth any errant curls, or let it air dry. Then “add a little undone texture” with a volumizing, texturizing spray, such as IGK’s Beach Club ($29). “Spray from roots to ends and scrunch it in, or twist [hair] and spray for light waves,” he says, and part it down the middle.
Then, on each side of your part, separate 2-inch-wide sections of face-framing hair. Clip your remaining hair out of the way, then separate the sections again, so you have four 1-inch-wide segments. Braid each section loosely, then blast the end of each braid with texturizing spray. Pinch with your fingers to seal, or press the ends with a flat iron for a longer-lasting hold. You can also wrap clear elastics around the ends, but don’t fret if they unravel: It’s part of the vibe!

Put the smoky eye on hold till fall: This summer is all about experimenting with neon eye shadow.
“It’s a great way to add an edge and a pop of color,” says makeup artist Patrick Ta, who gave Camila Coelho tropical pink lids for this year’s Met Gala. “If I’m in a hurry and need to execute something that’s fast but fashionable, I always jump to neon shades . . . to make a statement.”
Influencer and makeup maven Huda Kattan, whose Neon Obsession palettes ($29 at Sephora.com) hit stores earlier this month, suggests applying a thin layer of concealer from lashes to brow bone to even out skin tone before applying color.
Then, tap on a thin layer of a bright shade using a blending brush, adding color slowly until you’ve reached the intensity you’re after.
“Keep it simple and don’t go overboard with a million different colors,” says Ta. “Stick to one neon tone and spend time building the color up.”
A neon mani is a good gateway for those wary of pigmented eye shadow. For the hands, a bright yellow (such as Côte No. 116, $18 at Coteshop.co) flatters all skin tones, says nail artist and Côte co-founder Mary Lennon — and it avoids the fungal connotations of a more muted shade. For maximum pop, says Lennon, “use a thin coat of white [polish] before applying one coat of your favorite neon shade. The color will jump off your nails.”

Dramatic, winged eyeliner is universally flattering — but the inky black standard doesn’t really scream “pool party.”
“We tend to gravitate toward color when it’s hot,” says makeup artist Georgie Eisdell, who has given “X-Men” star Sophie Turner bold winged liner in both cobalt and stark white (she used Stila Stay All Day Liquid Eye Liner in “Snow,” $22 at Sephora.com) for recent red carpets.
Although liquid liner makes for a precise wing, pencil can work too. “Pencil should always be powdered with a similar or the same color to hold and last,” she says. “If you are using liquid, make sure the color is opaque and dense in pigment.”
Draw a thick swoosh of colorful liner above your lash line. Once it’s dry, you have two options: to trace a thinner black line just above your lashes for a lengthening illusion like Turner’s (or Elle Fanning’s awesome aqua Met Gala look), or to let the color stand on its own for a more intergalactic look like Priyanka Chopra’s pastel pop.
If you’ve got a less-than-steady hand, “try using a fine eyeliner brush instead of what the liquid liner comes with,” Eisdell says.

Looking for the antidote to long, mermaid hair? Try a blunt chop.
“It looks fresh, cool and feminine — and super sexy, because you get to see the back of the neck, which is beautiful for summer,” says star stylist Tommy Buckett.
Although styling the cut in textured waves is still chic, a glossy and straight look is of the moment.
Buckett’s Holy Grail product for kick-starting the straightening process is the Garnier Fructis Sleek Shot In-Shower Styler ($4.99 at Target.com), which you mix in with your shampoo to help tame frizz. Blow-dry, then straighten the ends for a defined look. Finish with a shimmery oil (try R+Co Neon Lights spray oil, $29 at RAndCo.com) or a slicking pomade to keep the cut looking cool, not childlike.
“A classic bob [length should] be anywhere between your ears and a few inches above the shoulders,” says Buckett, who advises trims every six to eight weeks to “get that sharp look.”

Eyes might be brighter than ever, but lips have gone quiet.
“Nude lips are the perfect pairing to your post-beach glowy tan,” says Ta, who recently launched his own line of shimmer-centric nude products and gave Bella Hadid a mauve mouth for the red carpet in Cannes.
A swoosh of nude gloss over bare lips is the low-maintenance move. But if you’re going for a longer-lasting look, line lips with a pencil one shade darker than your lipstick — which should have a satin finish rather than matte, to avoid looking chapped.
Swipe on a shade slightly lighter than your natural color (on Hadid, he used Dior’s Lip Tattoo in “321 Natural Rose,” $30 at Dior.com), then finish with a thin layer of gloss to add dimension and lock in color. Ta suggests Major Lip Glow Shine in “She’s Expensive” ($22 at Sephora.com) from his own line.
