A woman and her 10-year-old daughter were found dead, and a man is in critical condition Saturday following what police are investigating as an attempted double murder-suicide in the Bronx.
A child sounded the alarm by calling a relative to say the 10-year-old wasn’t breathing, police sources said.
The relative asked cops to check on the family’s third-floor apartment on Belmont Avenue near East 181st Street.
Cops arrived around 1:30 p.m. to find two of the woman’s other daughters, ages 15 and 17, waiting for them outside.
Her 13-year-old son was with his sister’s lifeless body, cops said.
The 34-year-old mom’s body was found inside a different bedroom, where the 32-year-old man had shot himself in the head, police said.
When police entered the bedroom, they saw the man with the gun in his hand, prompting them to back off temporarily before proceeding into the room, cops said.
The mother and daughter may have been strangled to death, sources said. They were pronounced dead at the scene. The Medical Examiner will determine cause of death.
The man was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital with an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, authorities said.
“There is a guy in there with a gun,” cops told one neighbor as they moved people out of the area.
“The cops came running and telling me to get back, get back,” he said.
Another child from the home was seen crying for her mother, said teenage neighbor Tiana Barios.
“She was crying hysterically saying, “Mommy, mommy, mommy,’ and screaming loud,” said Barios, 13. “The little girl asked for water. We brought her water, tried to calm them down.”
It was not immediately clear if the man is the children’s father, but police said he appeared to have been in a relationship with the mom.
“They had him on stretcher with handcuffs and he had blood everywhere,” Barios continued. “He had a hole on top of his head.”
“They were moving quickly. There were no sign of him talking. There was no breathing, there was no movement. He was stiff.”
