Young women who watch a lot of pornography are more likely to feel insecure during sex — and enjoy it less as a result — suggests a new study.

Researchers found that college-age straight women today are more likely to watch porn than their predecessor. But they are also more likely to have insecurities about their body and suffer reduced enjoyment of intimate moments with their partners.
Although researchers found no direct link between women watching porn and feeling insecure during sex, they did discover a direct link between thinking about porn during sex and insecurities.
And the findings also showed that the more women used porn for self-pleasure, the more likely they were to think about it during sex.
In other words, pornography use for women is associated with increased thoughts of pornography during sexual encounters. And increased pornography thoughts is associated with increased appearance insecurity and decreased enjoyment of intimate acts during sex.
“Women with higher rates of viewing pornography were more likely to experience thoughts about pornography during sex with a partner, rely on those thoughts to obtain or maintain excitement, or report a preference for pornography over sex with a partner,” said Assistant Professor Jennifer Johnson, of Virginia Commonwealth University in the US.
However, Johnson said a woman can still have her cake and eat it too if she doesn’t rely on those thoughts during the deed.
“Contrary to our hypotheses, we did not find a direct link between pornography consumption for masturbation and an increase in the experience of appearance insecurity nor did we find a direct link between pornography consumption for masturbation and lower enjoyment of intimate acts during sex with a partner,” she said.
“However, and interestingly, post hoc model modifications indicated that women’s pornography use for masturbation did correlate to increased insecurities about their appearance and to diminished enjoyment of intimate acts during sex by increased thoughts of pornography during sexual activity.”
The study was published in the Journal of Women’s Health.
