Brooklyn is home to the vast majority of US baby boomers

Brooklyn sure is booming — not with hipsters, but with baby boomers.

A new study of US ZIP codes with the biggest populations of baby boomers found that eight of the top 15 areas across the country are right in Kings County.

Using census data to determine the number of residents born between 1948 and 1962 living in different neighborhoods, apartment listings site RentCafe found that ZIP code 11234 (Mill Basin, Marine Park, Bergen Beach) topped the list with just under 20,000 baby boomers. Canarsie, aka 11236, follows right behind with about 18,600.

Also in the top 15: 11229 (Sheepshead Bay and Gerritsen Beach), 11235 (Brighton Beach and Manhattan Beach), 11226 (Flatbush), 11207 (Brownsville, East New York, Cypress Hills) and 11230 (Midwood).

These silver-haired southeastern swaths of Brooklyn are joined by Manhattan’s Upper West Side (10025) and Queens’ Elmhurst and Flushing neighborhoods in RentCafe’s top 15.

“This certainly challenges the myth that all seniors prefer Florida with New York City boasting almost half as many baby boomers as the entire state of Florida — 1.4 million versus 3.9 million,” the study says. “NYC does a fairly good job catering to the needs of its older residents with various senior discounts (from transportation to entertainment), social programs and cultural activities.”

While New York has retained sizable pockets of aging denizens, other destinations saw much higher increases in their baby-boomer populations. The biggest jumps in residents of that generation occurred in Las Vegas (79%), Austin, Texas (74%), Mesa, Ariz. (76%), Amarillo, Texas (61%), and Portland, Ore. (54%).

And, as expected, ZIP codes in sunny Arizona, Florida and Texas boast the largest share of baby boomers.
