'Djokovic is the favorite, but we would like to see Federer win' – Kiefer

In an interview to NDR, the former German tennis player commented on the Australian Open mens side. Kiefer believes that the old guys have the highest chances to triumph, but the 21-year-old Alexander Zverev can make an upset.

is my clear favorite in Melbourne. We would obviously like to see winning to reach the magical 100 titles unit just in a Grand Slam. But Zverev can compete with this group.

At latest, when the oldest guys drop down, if he has all the factors like health and fitness, he will win some Grand Slams. But all the puzzle pieces need to be put together, said Kiefer. Commenting on Zverev furthermore, Kiefer added: Obviously Sascha comes to Australia with a lot of confidence.

Everyone expects a Grand Slam title from him. But you should not forget: the ATP Finals is one week with best of three sets format, a Grand Slam lasts for more than two weeks with the best of five sets matches. I think that Zverev made a huge step forward in the right direction.

You can see that his co-operation with Ivan Lendl is working. On what level can Lendl help Zverev? The mental side plays a very important role in tennis, especially with big points. At the time, you could see how he worked with Andy Murray.

He was nervous on court, but with Lendl, Andy became much calmer, much more confident and he even won Wimbledon and Olympics. And this development could be seen with Zverev too. Sascha can win the title in Australia as well. With women, I would like to see Serena Williams winning again.

Obviously, also Angelique Kerber belongs to the favourites group, she also has a good coach, my Olympic teammate Rainer Schuttler, Kiefer laughed. ALSO READ: Djokovic would beat Roger Federer in Australian Open final – Evert
