A former city council candidate pleaded guilty Monday to stealing public funds by accepting straw donations, authorities said.
Albert Alvarez, the ex-chief of staff for former City Council Majority Leader Joel Rivera, copped to a misdemeanor charge of offering a false instrument for filing and agreed to pay $10,450 in restitution as part of a no-jail plea deal.

“In New York, corruption is never acceptable, and offenders will always be brought to justice for their misdeeds,” said Attorney General Letitia James.
The AG’s office said in a statement that staffers at Bronx nonprofit Tremont Crotona Day Care Center gave cash to other employees to contribute to Alvarez in violation of campaign finance limits.
The failed pol accepted at least $4,500 in public matching funds to which he wasn’t entitled, officials said. Alvarez’s campaign was unsuccessful, and he lost the Democratic primary to Ritchie Torres.
