Kyle Lauletta is not happy after Giants demotion

Kyle Lauletta’s NFL debut did not go well last week and as a result, he was hit with a demotion he did not see coming.

“I’m disappointed,” Lauletta said Sunday after the Giants were beaten by the Titans 17-0. “Just not happy, but I’ll do what I can to do my role the best I can, and that was to be on the sideline and try to see stuff out there.”

The Giants made another change in their quarterback pecking order, again making Lauletta inactive and returning Alex Tanney into the backup role behind Eli Manning. This was the way the Giants operated the first 11 games this season, with the 31-year-old Tanney as the backup and Lauletta not in uniform on game days. Two weeks ago, Lauletta gained a promotion that did not last.

“Just felt like it was going to give us the best chance to win,” Shurmur said of moving Tanney over Lauletta. “That’s the reason.”

With the Giants last week leading the Redskins 40-0, Shurmur decided to give Manning the fourth quarter off and inserted Lauletta, giving the rookie his first NFL action. It was a rough outing. Lauletta did not complete any of his five passes and threw an interception.

After that game, Shurmur said, “I feel that enough questions regarding Kyle, that those of you that were interested in seeing him, hopefully you got a chance to see what you were looking for.’’

Clearly, that debut impressed no one.

“Everything is connected,” Shurmur said, “so this week, last week, just felt like having Alex up would give us the best chance to win if he had to go in and play.’’

Tanney is a journeyman who has exactly one NFL game of experience on his résumé.

Lauletta said, “Yeah, it definitely did” when asked if he was surprised to arrive at the stadium Sunday morning and learn he was not going to get a uniform.
