Troy Aikman couldn’t wait to come to Mike McCarthy’s defense. Patriots-Vikings be damned.
Aikman railed against the Packers’ decision to fire McCarthy midseason during Sunday’s New England-Minnesota telecast, ripping Green Bay for getting rid of the coach despite his 4-7-1 record.
“Mike McCarthy deserves better,” Aikman, the Fox broadcaster and former Cowboys quarterback, said, via WEEI, of the coach in his 13th season who missed the playoffs last year and has arguably the best quarterback in the sport in Aaron Rodgers.
McCarthy earned a name in NFL lore in winning the Super Bowl with Green Bay after the 2010 season. But the duo have not been Brady-Belichick; this disastrous season is on the heels of a 7-9, playoff-less one.
The question for the Packers is who can turn Rodgers back into a Super Bowl quarterback. Aikman had a thought.
“John DeFilippo. I think he’s done a really nice job,” Aikman said about the Minnesota offensive coordinator. “Visiting with him, his philosophy, the things he’s been able to do as a bright young mind. If you have a young quarterback, or maybe even a veteran quarterback like Aaron Rodgers, who knows? But if you’re looking to simulate what they’ve done in Los Angeles, I think John DeFilippo is worth taking a look at.”
