Saquon Barkley one of three Giants picked for Pro Bowl

Saquon Barkley was the third-highest vote-getter in the fan vote for the Pro Bowl, a testament to his productivity and popularity. The rookie running back also impressed players and coaches throughout the NFL, and thus he was selected Tuesday to the Pro Bowl as one of three Giants players voted in.

Safety Landon Collins and kicker Aldrick Rosas also were selected. Collins had shoulder surgery last week and will not be able to play in the game Jan. 27 at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Fla.

Collins and Rosas were chosen as starters.

Barkley, the No. 2 pick in this year’s draft, is third in the league with 1,153 rushing yards, behind only Ezekiel Elliott and Todd Gurley. Barkley is also third in the league — again, behind Elliott and Gurley — with 1,809 yards from scrimmage. Barkley has 82 receptions and needs seven more in the final two games to break Reggie Bush’s league record for catches by a rookie running back (88 in 2006). Barkley needs 10 catches to break Odell Beckham Jr.’s Giants rookie record of 91, set in 2014.

Barkley is the first Giants running back selected for the Pro Bowl since 2006, when Tiki Barber made it for the last of his three consecutive appearances. Barkley is the first Giants rookie running back to make the Pro Bowl since Tucker Frederickson in 1965.

Collins was selected for his third consecutive Pro Bowl. He will end up missing the final four games of the season, requiring surgery to repair a partially torn labrum. Collins leads the team with 96 tackles.

Rosas, in his second season, blossomed into one of the most accurate kickers in the NFL, hitting 28 of his 29 field-goal attempts. Rosas’ percentage of .966 is second in the NFL, behind only Robbie Gould’s .967. The only miss for Rosas was a 52-yard attempt Oct. 11 against the Eagles.

The Giants had three alternatives selected: Linebacker Olivier Vernon and special-teamer Michael Thomas are first alternates and Beckham is a second alternate.
