Washington Redskins safety Montae Nicholson was arrested on Tuesday after his alleged role in a drunken assault in Loudon County, Va.
Nicholson and Sydney A. Maggiore, who is believed to be his girlfriend, reportedly honked their car horn at another man and woman in the early hours Tuesday, leading to a physical altercation in which they both assaulted the man and Maggiore hit the woman with a bottle, according to the police.
The man and woman were taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, according to the Washington Post.
“We are aware of the arrest of Montae Nicholson,” Redskins spokesman Tony Wyllie said in a statement. “We are gathering more information and will not comment until we have further details.”
The assault charge, a misdemeanor, carries a sentence of up to 12 months in jail. He was released on bond, while Maggiore remained in custody.
The 23-year-old Nicholson, a 2017 fourth-round draft pick, appeared in 14 games this season with seven starts, recording 41 tackles.
It’s the latest bad press for the Redskins, who have also dealt with blowback over a waiver claim on linebacker Reuben Foster, released by the 49ers following a domestic violence arrest.
