Giants may be without their defensive leader
Inside linebacker Alec Ogletree played all 70 defensive snaps in the 17-0 loss to the Titans. He arrived Wednesday at the Giants facility “not feeling well,’’ according to coach Pat Shurmur and was excused from practice.
“We’re just getting that checked out and then just see why,’’ Shurmur said in the morning.
Later in the afternoon, Ogletree appeared on the injury report as having sustained a concussion, meaning it looks as if the Giants will not have one of their best players on the field Sunday when they face the Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium.
Ogletree leads the Giants with five interceptions and is second on the team to Landon Collins with 93 tackles. He has started 13 of the 14 games this season, sitting out Oct. 28 against the Redskins with a strained hamstring. Undrafted rookie Tae Davis is the likely replacement for Ogletree in the starting lineup.
Last week, WR Odell Beckham Jr. was able to stretch with the team and take part in some light individual drills, but he was a no-show inside the field house Wednesday, still dealing with a quad contusion that has kept him out the past two games. It looks as if Beckham will not play this weekend and might be finished for the season.
“He feels better than he did last week,’’ Shurmur said.
Center Spencer Pulley (calf) and WR Russell Shepard (ankle) also did not practice. S Michael Thomas was excused for personal reasons. “Just dealing with illness in the family,’’ Shurmur said. … DL Kerry Wynn (thumb) was limited.
Eli Manning has been selected to the Pro Bowl four times in his 15-year career — most recently in 2015 — and is happy RB Saquon Barkley was voted in as a rookie.
“It’s great, I’m happy for Saquon,’’ Manning said. “He deserves it. He’s had a great year. He’s worked really hard. He’s done everything we’ve asked him to do. So excited for him he gets to experience that. It’ll be a fun deal for him.’’
With Beckham’s availability in question and Russell Shepard dealing with a sprained ankle, the Giants bolstered their depth at wide receiver by activating Cody Latimer off injured reserve. Latimer after four years with the Broncos signed with the Giants as a free agent and played in four games earlier this season, catching six passes for 108 yards. Latimer also can fill several roles on special teams, something Shepard did every game. To make room on the roster, cornerback and special teams regular Antonio Hamilton (quad) was put on IR.
